Gir National Park is one of the most ultimate renowned park and wild life sanctuary of India, situated at Gujarat. Gir National Park covers a distance which is more than 1400 square kilometers. Gir National Park is also recognized as Sasan-Gir. It is an expanded continent of Asiatic Lions and most safeguarded field of Lions. Indian Forest Department has successfully protected Eco-system and living creatures of Gir National Park. Many International organizations and dignitaries have come up with altruistic initiative to stretch out the lions breeding system. In reality, many informative organized activists and groups have participated and taken part for protection of species living here. In 2001, 327 Lions were counted and increased up to 359 Lions in April 2005. The number of Asiatic Lion of Girs goes upto 523 in 2015. Gir National Park has performed powerful role in flourishing the Lions breeding.
Gir National Park have the main vegetation which comprises of dry and deciduous forest and also the scrubs of Aracia. The teek trees dominates the Gir area and nearly half of the forest is covered with teek trees. Therefore, the main trees which you can find here in Gir forest are banyan, bamboo teek, acacia, Syzygium cumini, Ziziphus mauritiana. Also, the forest offers fuel wood worth more than 500 crores annually. The broad leaves of these trees gives lot of shade and also help in increasing the moisture content. The survey explains that around 400 species of plants are recorded in this forest. This survey also includes the research done by Department of Botany of University of Baroda.
The fauna at Gir is abundant and you can easily find around 300 species of lion found in this area. Panthera lions, Asiatic lions are slightly smaller in size as compared to the African lions. The government has started many programmes for the breeding of these lions. The National Park also dwells more than 300 species of birds and the important carnivores present in this forest are bears, leopards, cobras, jackals, mongooses and desert cats. The major attractions for tourists are variety of mammals, birsa and many carnivores and herbivores animals which includes large variety of lions and big cats.
